Reading Raffle Winners (1/26)
Books Won: Weather Together, How Much is a Million?, Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: Sleepover Sleuth, Magic Tree House: Fact Tracker: Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Word Collector
Fossil Brainstorm
We are starting a new unit in Science. Before we learned about our new topic, groups worked together to collaboratively brainstorm anything they think they already know about our topic. This helps gives us a starting point in our new unit, and gets the conversation flowing!
Multiplication War Game
Today we played an easy game that you can play at home with your child. All you need is a deck of cards! Each player gets half of a deck of cards and flips over the top 2 cards. Multiply the 2 cards together. The player with the largest product takes all 4 cards. Play repeats until one player wins all of the cards. This is a super fun way to practice our multiplication facts!
Reading Raffle (1/19)
Books Won: Sky Color, Jada Jones: Dancing Queen, Yuck's Robotic Butt Blast, and The Great Kapok Tree (not pictured)
Indoor Recess
Due to the cold temperatures, icy parking lots, and snow on the ground, we have had a lot of indoor recess lately. This gives us lots of time to play fun activities with our friends!
Context Clues
These papers might look tough (they include some very large vocabulary words), but that's the point. We are working on using context clues in our reading passages to determine the meaning of words. The best way to do that is to use large words, that students are unlikely to already know the meanings of. We discovered a few different ways to deduce the meanings of words in a complex text!
Reading Raffle (1/12)
Books Won: The Truth and Myths about Weird Animals, Zoey & Sassafras: Caterflies and Ice, The Boxcar Children: The Seackelton Sabotage, The Titanic: Lost and Found, and Diaper of a Wimpy Kid #17
Field Trip
Our field trip to the Fuller Craft Museum was a big hit! This museum is free and the students were invited to bring their families to see the other exhibits that they didn't get to see today.
Science: Card Sort
One of our science topics in this unit covers traits, heredity, and selection. In today's activity pairs worked together to sort cards that each showed a different fruit or vegetable - showing the outside, inside, flower, and the leaf of the plant. They found similarities in their features to create categories to sort them. This activity had us take a closer look at some common and unknown plants to help us further stretch our science knowledge of traits and heredity!
Reading Raffle (1/5)
Books Won: National Geographic: The Ultimate Book of Reptiles, The Gumazing Gum Girl: Chews Your Destiny, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: No Brainer, Pokemon: Battle for the Bolt Badge
Lucky Number
It's been a long time time we've played our favorite skip counting game, but the first week back from break seemed like the perfect time to play! This helped us review classroom expectations while reviewing our skip counting skills (which transfer to our multiplication & division skills).
Division Models
It's amazing how quickly these kids are catching on to the concept of division! This week we started using tiles to make division models. Then we moved on to matching models to various situations (word problems), where we have to determine which piece of information is missing (total number, number of groups, or number of items in a group).
Next week we start the connection between multiplication and division!
