Welcome to our third grade website!
Welcome! This website will be a great resource to use throughout our year together. You can use the links above to find everything you need for your child to succeed in third grade- such as classroom expectations, academic support, fun and educational games for your child, and so much more. This main page will be updated with weekly with announcements and important information for families. Don't forget to visit the "Monthly Photos" tab each week for updated photographs for our class learning and having fun in school.
Game Day
This Friday, March 29th, we will celebrate our 3rd glitter paw with a Game Day! Students are invited to bring a board game or card game to play with their classmates. Please do not send in video games or trading cards. Games will return home with students on the same day. Please reach out with any questions. We are looking forward to our fun reward!
Parent Teacher Conferences
The sign ups for Parent Teacher Conferences will be sent home tomorrow (3/26). You will be able to select from Thursday afternoon or evening (4/11) or Friday afternoon (4/12). If you have a specific time or time frame you need, please note it on the paper and return it asap as we work on a first-come first-serve basis. If your child has siblings in the building and you already known their appointment time, please note it on the sign up paper. If you haven't set up an appointment with their sibling's teachers, just write their names/ teacher's name and I will make sure to check in with them so we get you appointments that are close (but not too close) together.
(Please note: The evening conferences are on Thursday 4/11, not Friday 4/12. There was a small misprint with the original sign up paper that was sent home. An updated copy was sent home on 3/27)
I look forward to meeting with everyone!

MCAS Schedule
The grade 3 MCAS tests are quickly approaching. We are spending a lot time in class preparing for the ELA tests, as we take those first. We are reviewing lots of core skills while also polishing up how to respond to short answer questions (1 paragraph) and essay questions (5 paragraphs).
We will send home reminders as the dates get closer, but please make every effort to have your child to school on time, with a good night's sleep on the days of testing. These small things make a big impact on focus and effort.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Typically our students each take home a new book on the first day of each month, but this month we held off until 3/15, as these books linked so well to our fossil dig. Every student took home a copy of the Magic Tree House Fact Tracker Book: Dinosaurs to read and enjoy at home! If your child was absent or dismissed, don't worry! They will receive their copy when they return. |
Tissues
Our classroom supply of tissues is getting quite low. If you happen to be at a store and think to pick up a box or two for our classroom, we would greatly appreciate the donation!
Fractions
We are wrapping up our unit on fractions this week! If your child is still feeling uncomfortable with some of the more advanced concepts (especially plotting fractions on a number line and comparing fractions), you may want to utilize the Khan academy resource below.

MCAS Dates
Today (3/4), we sent home a letter with the MCAS dates. Third grade will be taking the ELA MCAS test on April 9th and 10th and the Math MCAS on April 30th and May 1st. Please be sure to add these dates to your calendar. It will be extra important to make sure your child gets a good night sleep and arrives to school on time on these days. We have already begun to prep for these exams, to make sure that everyone feels confident on testing days!
Primary Election Day (arrival change)
Tuesday, March 5th is the date for primary elections, which means there will be voting at our school. If you are dropping your child at the Extended Day program, please use the back door of the building. All students who are not enrolled in the morning care program, will need to enter the building by the third grade/ fifth grade wings. We will not be using the front doors, as the lobby will be used for voted. Thank you for your understanding.

We have 25 students in our classroom (13 boys, 12 girls). If your child is bringing in valentines they must have one for every member of the class. Early Release Day
Wednesday, January 31st is an early release day. There will be no extended day. Dismissal will be at 12:10.
Please make appropriate arrangements for picking up your child.
Valentine's Day
It may seem early, but Valentine's Day is less than a month away, and I know some families like to prepare early. A paper letter with details will be sent home on the first of February, but if you are looking for details now, you can find them below.
We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. Students are welcome to bring in valentines to exchange with their classmates. We currently have 25 students in our classroom (12 girls, 13 boys), but this number could change as we get closer to the holiday.
Important: Please have your child sign their name, but please leave the "to:" space blank. This makes it easier and faster to pass out the cards, thus ensuring we have more time for fun activities on the day.
If your child's valentines include some type of edible goodie, please make sure they are individually wrapped so the students can bring them home to enjoy. No food will be consumed in class.

Homework Suggestion
Has your child mastered their multiplication facts (from 0 - 12)? You can start to give them prompts like, "What multiplication facts do you know because we know because we know that 12 divided by 6 is 2?" (2x6 = 12, 6x2=12) We are starting to find the connection between multiplication and division and questions like these not only help us practice our facts but to deepen their understanding of the connection between multiplication and division.
Fuller Craft Museum
The Fuller Craft Museum was kind enough to welcome our students for our field trip. Everyone had a wonderful time exploring the different types of art.
If your child would like to return to the museum to explore exhibits that we didn't get to see, or to show you what they learned about various exhibits, families are always welcome to visit. Admission to this museum is always FREE!
You can visit www.fullercraft.org for more information about the museum.

Field Trip Tomorrow
Last call for permission slips for the field trip! Please have your child wear comfortable shoes. We will be back at school for lunch. Be sure to ask your child about what they saw at the museum!
Hats, Scarves, and Gloves... Oh My!
Today we were blessed with a donated class set of winter hats, scarves, and gloves. Every student got to pick out items that they wanted/ needed for the cold winter ahead.
I hope everyone enjoys their new winter gear!
Snow Dismissal Procedure
Due to the snow on the ground, third-grade will be dismissing out of the main doors in the front of the building. This will be the case until the majority of the snow in that area has melted. That way our students aren't waiting in a snowbank for their person to collect them. Thank you for your flexibility!

Chaperones Needed!
We need chaperones for our field trip on January 12th. We can take up to two adults with us. We will use any returned chaperone slips in a raffle, and randomly draw two people to join us. If you are selected, you will need to come to the school on either Monday or Tuesday of next week to complete a CORI form (if you aren't already CORIed with Brockton Public Schools). We will be leaving about 10:15, so please plan to be at the Kennedy by 10am and we will return by 12. If you return your slip, saying you would like to come, you will be informed either way if you are randomly selected. Thank you for considering helping us out!
Extra Clothes
The school nurse has asked that all students keep an extra outfit in their backpack in case of an emergency. The nurse's office is down to very few pairs of pants, and they are all very small. Please consider keeping an extra outfit in the bottom of your child's backpack just in case there is an issue.
Field Trip
Please check your child's folder for a permission slip for next week's field trip. We will be going on Friday, January 12th so it is important that your child brings their completed permission slip back before then. We will only be gone in the morning, leaving around 10:15 and returning just before noon. We will be eating lunch at school, so there is no need to pack a special lunch on that day.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Polar Express & Snowball Express
This week is full of winter activities! The Polar Express is a FREE event this Thursday evening (12/14). The doors open at 5pm and the event runs until 7:00. Tickets are limited, so be sure to get your response form in soon! The show is available for students in grades K - 3, but 4th and 5th graders can participate in crafts in the cafeteria. If you would like to volunteer you can sign up using the Sign Up Genius form, which can be found by clicking on the train picture.
The Snowball Express is an optional event during the school day, when students will be given time to shop for holiday gifts for their family members. We expect a notice & envelope to be sent home early in the week. On the envelope there will be a place for them to create a shopping list and budget for their shopping experience. All gifts will be between $1 and $15. The PAC is running this event and they are accepting donations of wrapping paper. We are not sure what day will be our assigned shopping day, but we do know that the event runs from Wednesday (12/13) to Friday (12/15). |
Picture Retake Day
If your child was absent, or you didn't like the way their fall portrait came out, you can have your child's picture retaken this Friday, December 15th.
December Spirit Week
The week before our December break will be spirit week. We took each of the school-wide themes to make them as engaging as possible. A paper notice will be sent home as it gets closer, but our list of fun days is found below so you can start to plan!
The PAC Meeting has been changed to 6pm on TUESDAY, December 5th. All are welcome to come and participate.
December Calendars
The December calendar of events was sent home on 12/1. Please keep it in a safe place as there are many events this month. The week before vacation will be spirit week. Our class will be using the school-wide daily themes and expanding them to make these days full of extra fun and excitement. The list of special themed days will be both sent home and posted here next week.
Giving Tuesday
Update: Thank you to those who were able to share our project! We were able to get fully funded and we expect to have at least another month's worth of snacks for our class!
If anyone is feeling moved by the spirit of Giving Tuesday, we would appreciate sharing our Donors Choose link to any social media accounts you may have. This helps spread the word that our classroom is looking for help getting a project funded. This time around, we are looking to replenish our snack bin as we will most likely be out of snacks within the week! Thank you for any shares you can send our way! You can click on the "Donors Choose" image in this post to access our project page.
Snack Time
Our collection of snacks for snack time is getting quite low. If your child hasn't been bringing a snack for snack time because they've getting one from school it's probably a good idea to start packing on again, as I expect our collection to run out either this week or the next.
Thank You
A great big thank you to everyone who came out to conferences this week. It was wonderful to be able to connect on your child's growth and progress so far this year as well as goals for the future. If you were unable to make it, and we haven't already connected, I will be in touch this week about rescheduling.
Parade Notices
Blue notices were sent home this week with information about the parade on Saturday, November 25th. There is an option to sign up to help decorate the Kennedy School float as well as a sign up to ride on the float in the parade.
See the posting below about some other fun activities happening in the city on the day of the parade!

Parent-Teacher Conference Reminder
Fall conferences will be held this Thursday and Friday, November 16th and 17th. The exact time of your conference was sent home with your child at the end of last week. If you didn't receive the card with your information, please reach out as soon as possible so I can send you your time slot. In order to stay on schedule, please plan on arriving 5-minutes before your scheduled time. This will help our transitions run smoothly, which will hopefully allow us to stay running on time. If your child is with you, they will be asked to wait in the hallway during our meeting for privacy reasons. If you can no longer make your assigned time, please reach out as soon as possible so we can get you a new time that works for you. I am greatly looking forward meeting with each of you.
November Book
As you know, every month each student in our class will take home a new book that is gifted to them! In September, they took home We Will Rock our Classmates and in October we took home Zoey and Sassafras. This month students took home a super cool book that is 2 chapter books in one! Ellray Jakes is Not a Chicken!/ Ellray Jakes is a Rock Star! was sent home for students to read in November. These are great stories for students to read for their nightly reading log and just for fun! |
When was the last time you looked at our photographs?
Our class has been working so hard and doing lots of fun things lately. You can view pictures of us learning under the "Monthly Photos" tab at the top of the screen. These make great conversation starters so you can talk to your child about specific things we are learning and activities we did together!
Also, our "Honors & Awards" section is up to date. This page recognizes students in our class that have been selected as Mathematician, Author, and Cougar of the Month. You can find this page under the "Our Classroom" tab at the top of the page. It will be updated each month as we recognize more of our amazing students! |

Math Test Scores (sent home on 10/16)
Last week we took our first math test of the year. This test covered everything we've covered so far (graphing, multiplication and arrays). The tests can't be sent home, as they are online assessments. However, your child score will be sent home next week (once the absent students have taken their tests). If you have concerns about your child's test grade, their math workbook from this unit will be sent home on the same day as their score. We did many problems in their workbooks, but there are plenty of problems that can still be used for continued skill practice at home.
Book Orders: Due 10/18
Scholastic Book Orders were sent home today. They are filled with many high-interest titles for students. There is No School on Monday, October 9th. Please remind your child to wear sneakers for Gym on the day we return (10/10).
Thank You!
Thank you so much to everyone who came out to Open House tonight. It was so great to everyone and welcome you into our third-grade family. If you were unable to attend, not to worry! Your child's papers from this event will be sent home tomorrow. In their papers, you will find a quick survey for parents to fill out about their child. This is optional, but I hope that you will be able to find some time in the next few weeks to complete and return this form so I will be able to see your child through your eyes, in order to get to know them better. As always thank you for your support!

Pajama Day This Thursday!
This Thursday, September 28th, is our class Pajama Day! Students are invited to wear pajamas (or comfortable clothes) to school. They can also choose to bring a small stuffed animal to spend the day with them if they want! If your child would like to wear slippers, please make sure they wear regular shoes, and they'll be able to change in the building. This way they'll have outdoor shoes for recess. This will be a nice relaxing day after our big Fun Run event the day before!
Fun Run Reminders
This Wednesday (9/27) is the big event we've been waiting for! Students are being asked to wear a white, green, or Kennedy School shirt to the event. A large sticker will be applied to the back of each child's shirt and a staff member will check off each lap, that they run, on that sticker (don't worry- they tell us the sticker will peel off after the race is over).
The event will take place rain or shine. If it is raining we will use the gymnasium, but we are crossing our fingers for good weather so we can use one of the fields. All students should wear sneakers and they might want to bring a water bottle.
We are looking forward to this amazing event!

Fundraising Update (9/23)
We are crushing the fundraising game! As of now, every time our class runs around the track at Wednesday's event, we will bring in $26 for our school. This week our class won one of the nightly challenges, and every student got a new "Hover Soccer" activity for home!
There is still to raise funds for our school before Wednesday's Fun Run! Current Challenges * Any student who raises a total of $60 in NEW funds THIS WEEKEND, will earn a special surprise prize! *If we can get 60% of school registered on the website, our whole school will earn a school-wide pajama day! If you haven't registered yet, you can do so here! |
Fundraising Update
Our fundraising efforts are off to a great start! As of Monday morning, our class had raised the second highest amount of money in the building! As of Tuesday morning, we've already earned our first TWO class rewards. We completed our art-themed reward on Monday and we will do our next reward once the grass dries, as it is an outside reward. Keep up the great work. Remember our Fun Run is next Wednesday (9/27), so there is still lots of time to fundraise for our school, earn prizes and class rewards! If you need any help registering your child, please reach out!
Weekly Homework
Third grade weekly homework starts this week. On Monday, students were sent home with their Homework Log. Outside of school, students should read for 20-minutes and practice their addition or subtraction facts for 10-minutes daily. Minutes, genres, and titles should be logged on the reading log and minutes, topic practiced, and how they practiced should be recorded on the math log. If there is a day of no school, students do not need to do homework on that day. Homework logs should be returned to school every Friday.
*If you are looking for fun ways to have your child practice their math facts, don't forget that we have lots of fun math fact games on our website! In the top row of tabs just hover over "Websites & Games", "Math Games", and then click on "Math Facts".*

Today we announced our big fundraiser! We are raising money to help our school and we need your help. You can make your child an account at www.mybooster.com to register them. You'll be able to share their account with family, friends, and on your social media accounts to ask for donations for your child. On September 27th we will participate in the Fun Run, where students run laps on a special track, set up for this event. Your donations can either be a flat donation ($5, $10, $20, etc) or they can collect "pledges per lap" (ex. $1 for every lap they run). Through their fundraising, children are working to earn individual prizes (that all encourage healthy habits and exercise) and well as fun classroom rewards. As more information is available about this great event, it will be shared on our website.

All About Me Poster
The first homework assignment of the year was sent home on Friday (9/8). Students were each given an "All About Me" poster to fill in and decorate, to represent themselves. We will hang these posters in our hallway so students can learn more about each other throughout the semester. If you need any help completing the poster or you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Posters are due on or before Friday, September 15th.
I look forward to seeing everyone's wonderful creations.

First Day Book
To celebrate our fabulous first day of school, every student got to take home a copy of the book, We Will Rock Our Classmates to keep. It is the sequel to the book We Do Not Eat Our Classmates, which we read aloud in class today. I hope everyone enjoys their new story!
Quick Links
All of the information in these links can be found in the drop down menu above, but I've posted some of the more important links below, to hopefully make it easier to find important information during the first few weeks of school.
Despite the warm temperatures predicted for the first week of school, students should still dress in layers. The third grade classrooms all have air conditioning that we can not turn up, down, or off. Students may want a sweatshirt for inside, but will most likely want short sleeves for outside. Please plan accordingly. |
