Ms. Fallon's Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Day Parade

Always a fun way to celebrate the upcoming holiday!

Parade Balloons
Check out some of our wonderful creations!
Creating Parade Balloons
After reading the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet, which is about the creator of the balloons for the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade we created our own parade balloons. Students worked hard this week to sketch, design, and create their balloons!
Molly's Pilgrim
This week we read the book Molly's Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen. After reading each chunk of the story students practiced answering comprehension questions based based on the text. Some days students had the support of a partner and other days they worked to answer the questions independently. This was a great way to learn more about Thanksgiving, the meaning of the word "pilgrim", and our current reading topic of immigration.

Life Cycles
We have started our second unit of science. We are currently learning about life cycles of various species. This week students worked with a partner to put the life events of animals in the correct sequence. Then we compared their animal's life timelines to notice the similarities and differences. This knowledge will help us as we learn more about lifecycles.

Math Mystery: Area
Students practiced their knowledge of finding the area of shapes in today's Math Mystery. Partners worked together to save the alien leader who had been abducted from his planet! In order to do this, they had to solve math problems (all surrounding area) and then discover the clue hidden within each set of problems. These problems included word problems, tiled shapes, shapes with the length and width labeled and rectilinear figures. Each clue led the students one step closer to identifying the villains. Congratulations to those who were able to save the alien!
Construction Day
Today we donned our hard hats and entered the third grade construction zone! In the morning, we worked on creating 2-column notes to answer a question about how construction workers are similar and different than engineers. In the afternoon, students rotated between three activities: finding the area of shapes on task cards, "building" stronger sentences by adding adjectives and details, and "engineering" the outlines of a shape on the floor (with a given area). Early finishers got to construct new buildings with LEGO! We had a lot of fun, while learning a lot!

Voting
On Monday, the third graders "voted" at the polls. We voted on the same races that our ward's residents will vote for Tuesday. We will tally up the results and see how our results line up with the city's results.

Partner Work: Vocabulary
Building up our vocabulary is a very important reading strategy. The more words we know, the better readers we will be! Today, partners were given a set of questions - each using a specific vocabulary word from our list. Partners discussed possible answers to the questions before recording their answer in their workbooks.
