Point of View
This week we are diving deep into the concept of point of view. Today students read different excerpts from chapter books we read earlier this year, and worked to identify which point of view they were told from (1st person, 2nd person, or 3rd person) by highlighting the pronouns and other clues in the texts. This will help us as we write stories told from various points of view in Writing.
Reading Raffle Winners (2/16)
Books won: Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Sports Illustrated: Quarterback Rush, National Geographic: Deadliest Animals on Earth, Amelia Bedelia: Unleashed, and Princess Unleashed
Rock Paper Scissors Tournament
As our final activity before vacation, we played a game that our staff played amongst ourselves today. We had a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament where each student started with a string of beads and could challenge anyone in the room. If they won a round, they received the beads of the person they played against. Students then went on to challenge someone different who had beads, and play continued until the time was up. The player with the most beads wins!
Pictionary
Another snow storm = another day of indoor recess. Today we mixed it up, and played Pictionary!
Valentines
After a long day, we took some time to explore our valentine bags!
Fraction Bingo
As students took turns passing out their valentines, we practiced our math skills with fraction bingo!
Fraction Flashcards
We are practicing identifying fractions, so today we started to use fraction flashcards. These will made available for students to use when they finish their work early. These are a fun way to practice our fraction recognition!
STEM Project: Igloos
Our STEM coach, Mrs. Gordon, brought in a fun STEM activity for us to try today! Groups worked together to design and create an igloo using just toothpicks and marshmallows. Here are some of our engineers at work!

Fraction Review
We have just started fractions! We started by reviewing how participation shapes into equal parts (same size & shape). As the unit progresses, we will learn about plotting fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, mixed numbers, fractions greater than one (formerly known as improper fractions), and equivalent fractions.
Jeopardy Math Review Game
To review for the big math test, we played Math Review Jeopardy!

Flashlight Friday
On Friday afternoon, we took some to read some books from our library to both practice our fluency, and to enjoy some good stories. This was no ordinary reading event, we turned off the lights, and read by the light of flashlights! Students loved reading in fun places, by the light of their flashlight!
Dividing Large Numbers
This week we worked on two different strategies for dividing larger numbers (example 36 divided by 3 or 56 divided by 8). Here are some photos of our class learning how to use base ten blocks to create models of these types of division problems.
